From Investment to Independence

So very recently, The Inter American Development Bank organized the largest investor conference ever held in Haiti. This is a tremendous stride for historically "the eye and jewel of world". Plagued by misallocation of public resources and international funds, Haiti has had its share. But in my opinion this can be the independence that many local Haitians can benefit from. The opportunity to work and earn money and decide how to spend it. 50 cent titled his first major album the power of the dollar, and the dollar is truly powerful especially for the poor in developing nations. One of my favorite blog posed a question "Will trade become more important than aid some day?" And I say yes, it has too especially for Haiti.

At one point in time Haiti exported more goods than that of the original colonies and the revenues earned, astounding. Yes it was accomplished largely at the expense of slave labor, but think about it in terms of today. Imagine a place where almost 85% of the able body population is working and earning money, do you know what that does to the GDP? Do you know what that does to the quality and standard of living? Thats a Utopian Ideology. Something I would love to see. And to The Onion, Haiti may be able to make that Bid for the Olympics alot sooner.
